OpenOffice, is an alternative to Microsoft Office in the Windows environment, you can download it from here. |

NeoOffice, the new suite for Mac OS X can be downloaded from here. |
The world of information technology and software generate ways of acting as in any other workplace, and once a precedent is established it is very difficult to change it. For example, once users discovered that it was possible to download music by the Internet with Napster, they had found a good thing and looked no further. When Napster disappeared they migrated to other software such e-mule. If Napster would not have disappeared for legal mandatory they would still be using it, out of habit, even though there were better alternatives available. Call it human nature.
Within the computing world and more specifically within the office environment Microsoft Office is King. It has simply millions of users of it is the most used software! The idea of an improved alternative has simply never crossed the minds of most users.
And of course it's not very well known that there are alternatives, and the best thing about this, is that they are free ... Yes, hard to believe but true, free. One for the Windows environment, the OpenOffice and one for the Apple environment, the brand new NeoOffice.
The main doubt that arise when thinking about to change is; Will I be able to work with documents to be exchanged later with people who use Microsoft Word? Well, the answer is yes, but ...
These suites discussed here can read documents created in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint (Access is not allowed), and they open a document as if the user had opened it with Microsoft software, it will be displayed on screen as designed in Microsoft unless the document is very complex.
The only thing you need to keep in mind is when saving the document, if we want to save it for another user who works with Microsoft Word, save it as, or export, to the format of Microsoft.
These suites are free, fully functional and stable, and are upgradeable by the Internet regularly. And they don't install extraneous programs like Microsoft software does.
There are other alternatives in addition to NeoOffice or OpenOffice, like the recent iWorks from Apple, software, which in my opinion is better than Microsoft Office, especially due to its user friendly interface and price.
All include a word processor (Word), spreadsheet software (Excel), slideshow software (PowerPoint), and some inlcude a drawing program.
